April has been slow, which would explain why I'm blogging now rather than during the previous busy months, but nonetheless, things are looking up for the Car Gallery. Cash for Clunkers: Bummer for Used Cars?

We were really flying high at the Car Gallery this summer with good sales numbers, lots of repeat business, and some strong internet sales; and then everything slowed down. When virtually no one was buying new cars, the "Cash for Clunkers" program gave the new car dealers a much needed boost, but it seems to be having a negative effect on used cars sales. Once the program started, we saw our sales drop. The incentive is great but it's not looking good for used car sales. The government is taking all of these "gas guzzlers" off the road (mostly vans, SUVs, and pickups) and crushing them, so there are less used cars available, which in turn will drive up prices. And, I know, you can argue that this is better for the environment, but a lot of these vehicles are perfectly reliable, especially if they continue to pass emissions testings. Why not tax the gas guzzler instead of destorying it!

You see, while this program is providing great savings for new car buyers, a lot of people still need to go the used car route because it's much more affordable. If you take all those trucks, vans, and SUVs off the road, that decreases the supply, which drives up prices. So now a minimum wage earner looking for an affordable pickup truck is going to have pay more. I hope there are more positive impacts on the used car market, but it's a shame that because the new car business needed a bailout, that we should suffer more to help them out. It's already been slow as it is for the past couple of years, way before the economic downturn, and this only further hinders our sales. But, we'll keep our heads up at the Car Gallery! We have a good reputation and continue to provide quality used cars at the lowest prices. Because of our honest approach and low prices on quality cars, a good number of sales come from repeat and referral buyers. Thank you longtime Car Gallery customers and new members to the family for keeping us alive during these trying times!

And remember, while they are giving you $4500 for your clunker, you are still paying way too much for a new car. Trade and save buying used! We probably won't give you gov't value for your trade, but the price of our car is still way less. The Low Miles Car Gallery

Hesitant about buying a used car? With the recent economic downturn, there are a lot of new "used" car buyers in the market. Sure buying new has its benefits including a manufacturer's warranty to back it, but its important to consider the costs. To highlight the savings, we present this 2005 Mitsubishi Galant ES at the Car Gallery for $8995. It has only 47,000 miles on it and it looks and runs great. We just sold the Titanic! Some very nice peeps drove all the way from Alabama to purchase this fully loaded 2004 Nissan Titan. Meet Car Vallery

We found this action figure at the Car Gallery and decided she should be our mascot and named her Car Vallery! Her jump suit of red and gold just so happens to be the Car Gallery colors. And, check out those shoes -- cars! We have no idea where she came from our what era she was made, but the hair and jump suit say 1970s, but those car shoes of teal and purple indicate early 1990s. Since introducing our official mascot yesterday afternoon, we've sold 6 cars, so she's a keeper! Yes, we're weird but at least we have a sense of humor.

Last Friday, our sales manager Alan came back from the auction gushing about the Nissan 'Titanic' we purchased and how beautiful and massive it is. It's actually called a Nissan Titan, but I did not want to spoil Alan's fun. It's a sweet ride with a lot of nice features including the Nissan DVD mobile theater system, navigation, sunroof, and plenty of other luxury features. This model is a 2004 which was the first year it was brought to the market (read edmunds review) . Now, the Big 3 has some serious competition coming out of Japan on full-sized pickup trucks, which American automakers have dominated for years. Don't get me wrong, the Ford F150 and Chevy Silverado are great, but in recent years, buyers have more choices in the pickup category.

Local Dealers Hurting

It's already a week old, which may as well be last decade for internet reporting standards, but here's a good article from the Chicago Tribune the other day about the "Credit Crisis" and it's effect on local dealers. Read here...

To summarize, the new car dealers, especially, the Big 3 are really suffering due not only to less buyers because of the economy, but also not being able to acquire new loans or floor plans. It also mentions that the internet has led to decreased profits as buyers are more educated to find the best deal.

While many dealers are suffering and closing, this is good time for the industry to change with the times. That car dealers lament over the internet "ruining the business," is absurd. They're not seeing the bigger picture.

We Buy From Where We Work!

We have had plenty of customers purchase vehicles from the Car Gallery who are employees at competing car lots up and down Western Ave. in Chicago. We ask them why they did not purchase from the dealer they work at, and they always say, "The prices are too high!" And they are not joking because we also get a lot of the competitions' business when their former customers come to us for their next purchase. We see on their credit reports how much they paid, and it's insanely high, sometimes double what they would have paid for the same vehicle at the Car Gallery. I'm not going to list the names of those dealers but one rhymes with SCAR SOUTHLET. We just want to get the word out to car buyers to beware of what contract you are getting yourself into and to compare prices before committing.

By-the-way, where do you think our employees buy their cars? That's right, the Car Gallery! The picture above is a 2004 BMW X3 that yours truly bought for his wife recently. That is our third purchase from the Car Gallery, and I'm not the only one. Whether a porter, clerk, sales manager, etc; we all have purchased our reliable vehicles from where we work!

It's that time of year again when everyone is "Irish" for the St. Patrick's Day festivities. And no city in the world save for Dublin, Ireland shows the passion and pride of being Irish like Chicago! The River will be green tomorrow for the downtown parade, which is cool, but this blogger has a soft spot for the South Side Parade being held on Sunday, as my parents and relatives are true South Side Irish! Make it an all-Irish weekend and go to both and do as the Irish do best -- have fun!
